The Great Tree Event

Along the side of our house there are 7 enormous pine trees. When we first bought the house their lower (dead) branches blocked the entire side of our house and you couldn't walk into the back yard. But with plenty of help from Jim and Jenna we cleared the dead lower branches and made a walkway. It was kind of pretty - like a grove. But the trees were huge and dropped piles of pine needles, sap and branches all over the deck, the walkway and in the gutters. Still, we loved the sound of the breeze in the trees.

But, during the last Nor'easter gale those 40 year old trees started swaying hard. In the morning three of them were leaning, toward our house and our neighbor's house. So after much debate and lots of tree guilt, we decided it was time to cut them down.

It was quite a production when the big trucks came...


These trees are 40 feet high and 40 years old and stand very close to our houses.


The arborists were incredibly skilled. Not a single problem.


Next they'll grind down the 7 stumps and plant 4 new trees. This time 10 ft. Bradford Pears, which flower white in the Spring and grow upward instead of in a bower. We're trying to get used to the change. And Drew's got a good souvenir...
